Reason In The Balance

This is Phillip E. Johnson's second book, published in 1995, and is the follow-up to Darwin On Trial. The title, Reason In The Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law, And Education, pretty much says it all. Those who want to understand the contemporary culture wars and be involved in their resolution cannot afford to neglect this book. Modern Art & The Death Of A Culture

This book, No God But God: Breaking With The Idols Of Our Age, is edited by Os Guinness and John Seel and serves as a trumpet call for revival and reformation among Evangelicals. This means one will have to watch out for Calvinism. With this said, Reformed theologians have consistently done some of the best work on church/state issues, worldviews, the culture wars, etc. This book is an insightful group of essays on modern tools and insights taken to excess—from politics, psychology, marketing, and management—that have become substitutes for God. As this book aptly points out, the temptation to idolatry is everyone's problem, with the worst temptations coming from the best gifts. The call to spiritual and theological integrity found in this book would do all of us a whole lot of good. I've gained much insight into the culture wars by reading this book. Idols For Destrcution

This book, Race And Culture: A World View, by Thomas Sowell, an acclaimed economist and a black senior fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, is not an easy read, but it is an excellent research tool in the ongoing culture wars. It investigates views on race and ethnicity, culture, and related issues, and challenges myths about the economics of race, race and mental ability, slavery, and multiculturalism in America. Encompassing more than a decade of research, this book shows that “cultural capital” has far more impact than politics, prejudice, or genetics on the social and economic fates of minorities, nations, and civilizations. According to Sowell, multiculturalism and affirmative action policies are only distractions likely to make matters worse. This book ought to make the supporters of currently fashionable public policy issues to examine their views closely. Dr. Sowell is a fine thinker, and this book reflects the objective scholarship that always characterizes his efforts.
